The second first post
In January 2021 I published a post here called "Permission." My intention was to create a body of work - to capture my unfolding ideas, learnings, and experiences, and share them publicly. I gave myself a whole list of permissions: to be messy and incomplete, to be a student instead of an expert, to write from the heart, to be disliked.
And then I still didn't post.
Not never - a handful of notes, the occasional LinkedIn post, then all of last year: nothing. This is the follow-up, five years later. Same ethos, new experiment.
What actually changed? Mostly this: I stopped believing the problem was discipline.
The blank page was one problem. Every attempt started from zero - sit down, summon something great, bang out an awesome article. The second problem was quieter: I'd write something, love it, come back a few days later in a different mood, and the publish button never got pressed. And behind both sat social media itself, which I've grappled with for a long time - likes, followers, contorting to an algorithm. Where is the line between sharing your work and doing things for a certain result? I never found a stance I could live with, so mostly I stayed quiet.
Here's the new experiment. I've built a system I call the garden. It catches ideas when I have them - usually on a trail, one button press - surfaces them later, and helps me tend them until they're ready to be useful to someone else. Capture, surface, curate, share. Instead of a blank page, I now walk into a garden that's been growing while I was out living my life. And nothing gets planted or published without my explicit yes.
Yes, there's AI in it. That's the experiment. These are the questions I'm playing with, out loud:
- How much AI assistance is right, and what feels authentic - to me, and to you reading?
- Trust versus convenience: is it really a dial where more AI always means less trust? Or can effort be spent exactly where it buys the most signal?
- Do I share when something feels ripe, or three times a week because that's what works?
- What does success look like here, and how would I even measure value?
I don't have the answers. That's the point. I get to test the approaches instead of defending one, and tell you what happens as I go. That transparency, honestly, is a weight off my shoulders.
So, full transparency: this post was made the way the garden works. I talked - a long, wandering ramble. An AI I work with interviewed me, pulled up my 2021 post, sorted my notes, and assembled a draft. Then I shaped every line before publishing. That's today's calibration. It will change, and when it does, I'll tell you.
Who is this for? I don't have a tidy answer. Someone thoughtful and curious, wrestling with similar questions. Two things grow here: the work itself - notes on coaching, leadership, and the inner game of building what matters without losing yourself - and the story of making it. Follow whichever interests you. Choose your own adventure, or just look around.
I'm a parent running a solo practice, with hobbies and a life and no desire to be on a screen all day. This is my bet that the hours I already spend thinking, hiking, and coaching can compound into something useful.
In 2021 I signed off with "Here's to the beginning of something great." I just didn't know how long the beginning would take.
Welcome, again.
